SMYRNA, Tenn. – A teenager was hit and killed by a car on I-24 in Smyrna Thursday afternoon while changing a flat tire for his mother.
WKRN News 2 reports that the driver, 33-year-old Tina Wilson, lost control of the car and crossed over the center lane into the emergency lane at mile marker 66 under the Sam Ridley overpass. Wilson hit the boy, but missed his younger sister.
Clifton Braunwalder, 13, was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead from his injuries. The mother was also injured, but her condition has not been released.
A witness followed the vehicle, which had fled the scene, to a location just over the Davidson County line.
Wilson was charged with DUI, leaving the scene, and failure to give notice of a crash.
She will be booked into the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Department. Additional charges may be made once all the evidence has been examined.
Wilson was released from jail early Friday morning on $5,000 bond. She was arreted again later in the morning and charged with vehicular homicide for killing Clifton and aggravated vehicular assault for striking his mother.
Her first court appearance is set for July 25.
