College offers Miley Cyrus ‘sociology’ class

Fans of Miley Cyrus can now study their favorite pop star thanks to a new sociology course offered at Skidmore College in New York.

Deans at the private liberal arts school in Saratoga Springs are incorporating the Wrecking Ball singer in their course catalogue with a class called The Sociology of Miley Cyrus: Race, Class, Gender, and Media.

Visiting assistant professor of sociology Carolyn Chernoff will lead the summer course, which will give an in depth look at the singer’s career from a child star to controversial pop culture icon.

A description for the course reads: “From Disney tween to twerking machine, Miley Cyrus has grown up in the public eye, trying on and discarding very different identities onscreen and off… Ongoing media frenzy focused on Miley Cyrus’ public image, music and body highlights the ways in which intersectional identities are shaped by pop culture and mass media.”

The course will explore issues of race, class, gender, and feminist critique of media, and analyze topics such as “The rise of the Disney Princess, gender stratification and the hyper-commodification of childhood, what happens to Disney stars as they age, bisexuality, queerness, and the female body.”
