HICKMAN COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – A worker with the Tennessee Department of transportation was killed and three others injured in a crash involving a semi on Interstate 40.
Lt. Bill Miller with the Tennessee Highway Patrol told WKRN News 2 that a TDOT crew was in route to a job when they discovered they had a flat tire about 9:40 a.m.
The crew pulled over on the side of the road and was unloading equipment from the vehicle when it was hit by the semi, which had veered off on the right side of the road for an unknown reason.
One of the TDOT workers was in front of the truck. He was hit and died at the scene. His identity has not been released.
Two of the other three injured were also a part of the TDOT crew. One of them, a 22-year-old, was flown to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where he was last listed as stable.
The third injured victim was the driver of the truck. He was injured and taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance.
Traffic is backed up for miles. Some drivers are are being turned around on the interstate while others are being diverted off at mile marker 172 in Dickson.
Drivers can take Highway 46 north to Highway 70 into Waverly before going south on Highway 13 to get back onto I-40 at Exit 143 for Linden/Waverly.
The roadway is expected to remain closed for several hours.
