PROHIBITION
The Prohibition period in the United States refers to the era when the manufacture, sale, and transportation of alcoholic beverages were prohibited by federal law. This period lasted from 1920 to 1933, as mandated by the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. However, enforcement of Prohibition varied from state to state and even within different regions of a state.
Western Kentucky, like many other parts of the country, was affected by Prohibition. The production and distribution of alcohol were largely illegal during this time, leading to the rise of illegal speakeasies, bootlegging, and organized crime. Moonshining, or the illicit production of alcohol, also became prevalent in many rural areas, including parts of Kentucky.

In Western Kentucky, as in other regions, Prohibition led to various social and economic consequences. While intended to promote temperance and reduce social issues associated with alcohol consumption, Prohibition often had unintended consequences such as an increase in illegal activities, a loss of tax revenue, and challenges in enforcement.
The 21st Amendment, ratified in 1933, repealed the 18th Amendment and effectively ended Prohibition. This allowed states to regain control over alcohol regulations and determine their own laws regarding the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages. After Prohibition ended, alcohol-related laws and regulations were gradually reintroduced, with each state setting its own policies.
I recommend looking into local historical records, archives, or history books that might provide insights into how Prohibition was experienced in Western Ky. Check out the library too!
